Have you heard of documentary family photography yet?

I think this style of photography may be new to some people. And for those familiar with it,  well I'm sure I'm just preaching to the choir! What I love about documentary photography is how unique it is to each family. And how it serves as this historical record of your life with all the people, places, and things you love. The photos are your mini time machine to go back and visit your life.

I'm looking at a picture of my husband reading to both of our children sitting cozy in his lap. It reminds me of lazy mornings hanging out as a family at home and watching my kids enjoy time with their daddy. They happen to be sitting in a chair that my Dad and Mom gave to me as a home warming present. Bonus memories! The photo reminds me of my home; our first home as a family.

I have another photo of my daughter eating her current favorite snack. "Seaweed!", she screams. She just so happened to lose her front tooth as well in the photo. So there's my daughter, chomping down on seaweed, one tooth missing, wearing her best feisty ugh, mom's taking a picture face. The photo has such richness for me - her favorite snack, her missing tooth that will be replaced soon, and her feisty spirit of course. I love it.

These photos speak to me and tell me stories about my life, my children, my home, my family, and more. And I love remembering about it all. That's why documentary photography has such a hold over me.  The stories. The meaning. When we all sit together as a family and "Remember when...!".
